Diffusing is one of the easiest ways to enjoy the benefits of essential oils. With the right essential oil scent combinations, you can neutralize odors, freshen the air, and turn any room into a calming sanctuary for sleep or a bright, uplifting bubble from the outside world.
But with so many possible scent combinations, how do you know what essential oils smell nice together? While you could always go with a premixed essential oil blend, there’s something meditative and creative about mixing the oils yourself. To help you get started, here are over 50 essential oil diffuser recipes for every season, mood, and occasion!
How to make an essential oil diffuser blend
Before you dive in, there are a few things to know.
- You’ll need about 8–10 drops of essential oil. However, you can always use less or more depending on how strong you want the scent to be and your diffuser’s directions.
- The essential oil diffuser you use matters. These diffuser recipes are designed for an ultrasonic diffuser, which uses vibrations to convert water and essential oils into a fine, cool mist.
- Where you place your diffuser is key. You should place your diffuser on a solid surface below eye level and as close to the middle of the room as possible.

Where to buy essential oils
Here’s a tip for finding high-quality essential oils: Check the label. Essential oil singles should list only the name of the oil or the plant it comes from. For blends, check that each ingredient is an essential oil, botanical, or carrier oil like coconut oil or jojoba oil. Avoid blends that have synthetic ingredients on the label—these aren’t as potent, and their scent may not last as long.
