  Six years ago today, I received the first ever Ohio Conference of Community Development Karen Kerns Dresser Public Service Award and Today the City of Lorain’s Building, Housing and Planning Department received their first Community Development Department of the Year Award. I’m honored to be a part of and lead a team that has been able to put all past challenges aside and shoot for the stars! Working in community and economic development for the past 6 years has taught me many lessons and has guided me to be a stronger and more compassionate leader. While, six years does not seem to be a long time - I’ve been able to identify keys to making a difference in what ever you decide to do.1. Grit - you need grit; the driver of achievement and success. Otherwise, you’ll never be satisfied with the product of your work. Especially Government work - it is exhausting, time consuming, but so critical to a communities fabric and resources. 2. Courage - having the courage to take on more than you think you’re capable of. Don’t let anyone tell you what you are and what you are not capable of. 3. Empathy - have the empathy and compassion for all people and the communities you serve. People need reliable support systems and resources .4. Perseverance - maintain the ability to serve and give your 110% all the time. What keeps me going is the singular thought of making better communities for our futures - where we struggle less and have more security within our lives. 5. Believe in Yourself - my mom, always told me growing up to believe in myself, no matter how small or big the dream is. She would say “only you can be your biggest advocate” - I believe we can make a difference #lorainproud#communitydevelopment #economicdevelopment #occd #nevergiveup
