Pickens County Progress from Jasper, Georgia (2024)

DAMAGE FROM PICKENS FOREST FIRES Rain that began late Sunday night brought an end to the forest fires that had been raging at various places throughout the Applachian mountain belt and especially in the Southern states. There were several such fires in Pickens county, though most of them wore getting under control when the rains began. The long spell of dry weather had ade the fallen leaves as dry as kinder, and at times. the flames are said to have leaped 30 feet in the air. There was considerable damage in Pickens county to standing timber, but it would have been much heavier but for the hard work of the regular fire fighting crew, and as equally as hard work by people living in the vicinity of the various fires.

Two negro men were badly burned in the Lookout Mountain section of Dade county. Big fires were also reported in Dawson county, and fires were reported in Cherokee and various other counties. In one of the counties an airplane equipped with radio spotted a man in a red truck setting the woods on fire. They circled over him until state patrolmen arrived and made an arrest. Last Thursday Governor Talmadge issued a proclamation banning hunting in the woods of Pickens and eleven other North Georgia counties.

This ban was lifted Monday, but the governor warned that the danger had not been entirely removed and urges everyone to be extremely cautious with fire. Near Little Mountain, in the Tate area, a dog was trapped between the main fire and a back fire and burned to death. Gilmer county suffered much worse than Pickens, and unconfirmed reports say that six houses were buzned in that county. A national guard company -was sent to help fight the fires in Gilmer. Wednesday investigators of the state forestry service had Mr.

Erman Stanfield arrested and also his son, Pat, age 13 and a neighbor, Gene Forrest, 19, charged with firing the woods last Sunday, Each one was held under $1000 bond for apperance in Superior Court next April. Brady Little, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hellman Little, and Alex Denson, son of Mr. and Mrs.

Will Denison, have joined the navy and left Wednesday. Macon. They expect to be assigned to San Diego, Calif. Mr. Mose Weber, of Escanaba, arrived by plane Saturday, and will spend the winter with his son, Mr.
